The Police Department has approximately 100 full-time sworn law enforcement officers and responds to more than 22,000 calls for service each year. Comprehensive law enforcement services and programs are provided to County citizens through 3 divisions:

We provide a wide array of police services through patrol, general investigations, narcotics investigations, crime prevention, traffic and school resource officers.

- Minimum of 21 years of age upon completion of initial training
- U.S. Citizen
- High school diploma/GED
- Acceptable driving record
- No felony convictions
Offers of employment will be contingent on successful completion of a thorough background

James City County offers a competitive benefits and compensation package, including a take-home car program; participation in Virginia Retirement System (LEOS); 11 paid holidays; tuition assistance; a home-ownership program; a free membership to James City County Recreation Center (fitness, pool) and eligibility for career advancement pay increases.
Non-certified police recruits must complete a 17-week basic law enforcement course at the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy and then complete an 8-week field training program. Police recruits will receive a 5% pay increase upon successful completion of the academy and field training.
Already-certified law enforcement officers in Virginia are brought in at a higher salary, do not have to attend the academy, but are required to complete a 5-week field training program.
Career development opportunities include advancement to Police Officer 2, Senior Officer and Master Officer with a 5% pay increase at each step. Positions and assignments include SWAT, marine patrol, bike patrol, traffic services, honor guard, underwater search and recovery, crime prevention, school resource officer, general instructor, field training officer and general or narcotics investigations.
