What Will You Do This Weekend?

Enjoy a paddle yoga class at Chickahominy Riverfront Park on Friday, June 23 or Saturday, June 24 from 8:30-9:45 a.m. The first five minutes of this 75-minute class is dedicated to teaching participants how to properly use the paddleboard and paddle. You’ll be guided through a 60-minute yoga sequence to challenge your core strength, balance, skills and help center your focus. Take the kids to a fun drop-in craft at the James City County Library each Friday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Catch-A-Craft and have some fun! (This is the same craft from the Williamsburg Regional Library on Tuesdays.)

Did you know that Charly’s Airport Restaurant is now open on Fridays from 5-8:30 p.m. for Friday Night Flights featuring live music on the patio and specials? It’s a fun, easy way to cap off a busy week. Plus, everyone deserves a slice of pie on a Friday night!

Take the kids to Fairy Gardens at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center on Saturday, June 24 from 10-11 am. Create a whimsical fairy garden! Participants will build and take home their own garden with miniatures and natural elements for fairies to live and play! Participants must be accompanied by an adult. Register: 806750-A.

What do you get when you add balloons and bubbles to music? A fantastic preschool dance party! Put on your dancing shoes and join the James City County Library for an exciting hour of songs, movement, rhymes, and just plain fun on Saturday, June 24 beginning at 11 a.m. Parents, it’s a great time for you to share your best moves with your little ones as well.

Enjoy Freedom Stories & More (all ages) at Freedom Park on Saturday, June 24 from noon until 3 p.m. Join Williamsburg native Dylan Pritchett, best known as ’The Storyteller’ along with Baba Jamal Koram as they share with freedom stories! The Free Black Settlement area is the backdrop for this special event. Also featured are unique crafts for kids, music and food available for purchase. Info: 757-259-4200.

Come celebrate summer with a good old fashioned campfire gathering at Chickahominy Riverfront Park with the Campfire Social on Saturday from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Enjoy s’mores, activities, storytelling and more around the campfire overlooking beautiful Gordon Creek.

Have some laughs at The Comedy Club of Williamsburg on Saturday, June 24 at 8 p.m. with David Tveite and Matty Litwack. Tveite has appeared at comedy clubs across the nation, performed at Portland’s Bridgetown Comedy Festival, Atlanta’s Laughing Skull Comedy Festival and Seattle’s Bumbershoot Music Festival, and was a semifinalist in the 2014 Seattle Comedy Competition.

On Sundays, join cycling enthusiasts from The Williamsburg Winery team on a group ride through the Historic Triangle and back to the Winery for wine and brunch specials at the Gabriel Archer Tavern. Ride registration begins each Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and the ride begins at 9 a.m. There is no fee to participate. All Cycling Club participants will receive a 15% discount at the Gabriel Archer Tavern following the completion of the ride. The discount is only valid the day of the ride. Complete 5 group rides in a 3-month span and receive a Williamsburg Winery Cycling Club t-shirt! The Williamsburg Wine Cycling Club offers two different group cycling options:

  • Option 1: 40 Miles with an average pace of 15-18 mph
  • Option 2: 25 Miles with an average pace of 11-14 mph

Are you planning a wedding? Attend The Engagement Lounge Bridal Expo on Sunday, June 25 from 2-5 p.m. at the Fort Magruder Hotel and Conference Center. There will be a variety of vendors, giveaways and a fashion show by Truly Yours Bridal.

Rent a kayak or bicycle and explore the waterways of Jamestown or the Historic Jamestown Island Loop. By water, you will see a variety of wildlife. By bike, the ride gives you a 3 or 5 mile option and is quite beautiful. Equipment is available for rental from the James City County Marina.

Cool off at a James City County outdoor pool! Pools are open daily at both Upper County Park and Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Certain fees apply.

A tasty adventure awaits culinary explorers at Busch Gardens® Food & Wine Festival each weekend. Busch Gardens invites guests to unleash their inner foodie with a variety of dishes and wines not normally served at the park on weekends through July 2. Enjoy authentic tastes from around the world while strolling through the world’s most beautiful theme park. Individual sampling portions and wine tastings, available for purchase in the park, create the recipe for a delicious experience each visit. New this year, cuisines from India, which will bring new tantalizing flavors to the Busch Gardens Food & Wine Festival. Want to try something special? York River State Park

On Friday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m., enjoy Canoeing with the Stars. Get away from the bright lights of the city and spend an evening with us looking at the night sky. For an added touch, we’ll enjoy it from a canoe! Whether you’re an expert on the stars and planets or a novice, you’ll still enjoy this peaceful trip on the creek. One experienced canoeist per canoe required. Reservations and prepayment are required by calling 757-566-3036. Canoes $13/person or $8/person (family 4+).  Prepayment required with reservation.

Find out what life was like as a Civil War soldier during the Civil War Encampment on Saturday, June 24 from noon until 4 p.m. What equipment did he use?  What were his greatest obstacles?  In commemoration of the Civil War, join us for an interpretive look at the life of the soldier. 

Take a night hike at York River State Park on Saturday, June 24 from 8:30-10 p.m.  What roams the woods after dark? Take a ranger guided tour with us to experience the sights and sounds after sundown. Enjoy the cooler temperatures with the sounds of raccoons, owls, and other creatures. After the hike, enjoy stargazing with the Virginia Peninsula Astronomy Club. Please call the office at 757-566-3036 for reservations.

Join the Virginia Peninsula Astronomy Stargazers for a night of wonder and discovery on Saturday, June 24 from 8:30-11:45 p.m. Away from the city lights, the broad cliffs above the York River are perfect for observing constellations, planets, and other features in the night sky. There is no fee for this program.

Attend River Seining from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, June 25. Seine nets have been used for ages to catch fish and other creatures in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributary rivers.  Our rangers will lead you in discovering the variety of aquatic life in the York River with seine and dip nets.

Dabble in Discovery from 4-5 p.m. on Sunday, June 25. Which came first, the gray fox or the red?  Does a crab keep its shell forever?  Can box turtles swim?  For the answer to these and other questions about the natural world, dabble in discovery with the onsite naturalist.

As the colors of sunset fall on the marsh, a variety of sounds can be heard from birds and other creatures.  Enjoy the beauty of this special time on the water with a guided paddling trip on Sunday, May 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.  Canoes are $9/person or $6/person (family of 4+), solo kayaks are $16/person, and tandem kayaks are $11/person.  Please call 757-566-3036 for reservations.  Prepayment required with reservation.
