What Will You Do This Weekend?

April 6

  • Did you know that April is Garden Month? Visit a garden or work in your own garden with supplies from a local garden store. Learn about different gardens to visit on the Explore JCCVA blog.
  • Enjoy a hike at York River State Park on Friday, April 6 from 10 a.m. until noon with the Taskinas Trek. The Taskinas Creek Trail is one of the most beautiful and challenging hikes in eastern Virginia. Experience the elevation changes of rollercoaster-like ravines. Keep an open eye for eagles in flight and muskrat taking a swim. Take in the panoramic views of the marsh and observe the wildlife.
  • Join Charly’s Airport Restaurant for Week 2 of Friday Night Flights on Friday, April 6 from 5-9 p.m.! Kari & the Jay will be rocking the patio from 5:30 - 8:30. For dinner, there will be smoked beef brisket sandwiches as the special.
  • Enjoy the monthly Forest Explorers Walk & Talk at Freedom Park on Saturday, April 7 from 9 a.m. until noon. The walks will begin at the Freedom Park playground, with a new walk starting every 30 minutes. This event is weather permitting and family-friendly.
  • CANCELED: Looking for an opportunity to get your bike out of “‘hibernation?” Attend Bikes Out of Hibernation on Saturday, April 7 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. This event includes free safety inspections, assistance for minor repairs, greasing, fitting as well as fun rides to “knock the rust off” after winter. Fun rides of 2, 5, 10 and 15 miles on the Virginia Capital Trail will be led by experienced leaders. Rides scheduled to start at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Riders younger than 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments provided. The rain date is Sunday, April 8.
  • Attend “Inside James Fort: Built of “Pales, Posts and Railes” on Saturday, April 7 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Historic Jamestowne. Building a fort proved to be a necessity for the colonists within a month of their arrival in 1607. In 1994, Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists found evidence of the trenches and post molds from the original palisade lines. Carpenter Paul Zelesnikar will demonstrate the tools and methods used by the first colonists to build everything from the fort walls to stools and chests. Stop by to learn more about this important trade! Free with paid admission to Historic Jamestowne.
  • Have you ever visited the Norge Depot Museum at the James City County Library? The Depot is open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and 2-4 p.m. on Sundays. See railroad and local historical exhibits including artifacts, photographs and clothing. A model railroad is running and a wooden railroad is available for kids. Take a picture with the caboose! Free, but donations appreciated.
  • Billsburg Brewery is excited to announce that Pump House will play the Billsburg Event Tent on Saturday, April 7 from 6-9 p.m., bringing some serious blues and R&B to the James City County Marina. Explore James City County and come join B2 for a special night of live music.
  • Attend a comedy show at the Comedy Club of Williamsburg on Saturday, April 7 at 8 p.m. featuring Dwight Simmons, a stand-up comedian based in Indianapolis. Cost is $21.
  • Have you ever visited Freedom Park? There are plenty of things to explore, including history, trails, Williamsburg Botanical Garden and more! Freedom Park has a rich historical background dating back to the 1650s. This park is the site of an 18th Century cemetery, the Revolutionary War Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary (1781) and a 17th century domicile which is revealing much archaeological research of the early colonial period (1680-1730). Freedom Park was also home to one of the nation's earliest Free Black Settlements in America from 1803-1850. Three historically accurate recreated cabins are located in the park, and are furnished with items authentic to the period. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to sunset.
