What Will You Do This Weekend?

May 25

  • Come and enjoy free live music for the first Jamestown Jams concert on Friday, May 25. The concert theme is Motown Night featuring Groove Motive. Entrance will open for each Jamestown Jams concert at 5:30 p.m. Concerts will take place on a grassy field within Jamestown Beach Event Park. Parking will be behind the old Jamestown Campground building at 2205 Jamestown Road adjacent to Jamestown Settlement.   • The annual Food & Wine Festival at Busch Gardens kicks off on Friday, May 25! Busch Gardens invites guests to unleash their inner foodie with a variety of dishes and wines not normally served at the park. Enjoy authentic tastes from around the world while strolling through the world's most beautiful theme park every weekend through Sunday, July 1. Individual sampling portions and wine tastings, available for purchase in the park, create the recipe for a delicious experience each visit. New kiosks this year include Cuba, Japan, Brazil and South Korea. 
  • Enjoy an outdoor Movie Under the Stars at Chickahominy Riverfront Park on Friday, May 25 at 8:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks. All ages welcome. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Movie subject to change. Weather permitting. The featured movie will be Coco.
  • Team up with the Virginia Master Naturalists to learn about and catalog wildlife in our local parks during Wildlife Mapping on Saturday, May 26 from 9 a.m. until noon. Enjoy a day of learning about data collection and animal identification to help better understand the distribution of wildlife in the area. Bring a camera and discover birds, frogs, butterflies and mammals! This is for adults 18+. No cost to participate, but registration is required and the May 26 code is 805210-A.
  • Enjoy Poses and Pints at Billsburg Brewery on Saturday, May 26 at 9:30 a.m. There will be a yoga practice suitable for all levels and stay after to try any one of the amazing beers offered at the brewery! All you need is a yoga mat, wear anything you are able to move freely in and be ready to have a great time! The cost to attend is $10 and half of your contribution will be sent directly to the nonprofit of the the month: Southern Hope Animal Rescue and Education (SHARE). They foster dogs and cats, but their main focus is the rescue of equine and large animals. They retrain horses who have been without a home and/or neglected, bring them up to proper nutrition and when they are ready, find them a new home.
  • Welcome summer in the James City County Library’s backyard on Saturday, May 26 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Come play in the sand, try your hand at cornhole, kick a beachball around or draw at the picnic table.
    It’s opening day at the James City County outdoor pools on Saturday, May 26. Chickahominy Riverfront Park and Upper County Park open for the year at noon. Pool fees apply. There will be door prizes every hour between 1-4 p.m.
    Sing the night away during Karaoke in the Park on Saturday, May 26 from 7-9 p.m. at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. All ages are welcome, but 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Weather permitting.

York River State Park

  • Explore the beautiful wetlands or river with York River State Park during Pick Your Paddle on Saturday, May 26 from 10 a.m. until noon. You may even encounter a variety of wild creatures. Learn something new and exciting as you paddle up the creek or down the river. And don't worry, we provide you with a paddle of your choice (canoe or kayak). Taskinas Creek and the York River are so rich in their resources and we'll teach you ways to protect them. Call 757-566-3036 for reservations. Canoes $9/person or $6/person (family of 4+), solo kayak $16/person, tandem kayak $11/person.  Prepayment required with reservation.
  • Which came first, the gray fox or the red? Does a crab keep its shell forever? Can box turtles swim? For the answer to these and other questions about the natural world, attend Dabble in Discovery on Saturday, May 26 from 1-3 p.m. with our onsite naturalist.
  • Long before there was a York River State Park, or even a York River, 6,000 plus years ago, marine creatures swam here in a shallow sea. Early whales, porpoises, sharks, clams, scallops, and snails all left traces of their existence, which we now find as fossils. Join York River State Park in discovering relics of these very old creatures as we hike to a fossil beach during the Fossil Frenzy on Saturday, May 26 from 4-6 p.m. No Cost.   • There is no better way to enjoy the full moon than from a canoe on the beautiful Taskinas Creek during the Mysterious Moonlight Canoe on Saturday, May 26 from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the marsh at night as we paddle slowly up the placid creek. One experienced canoeist per canoe required. Canoes are $13/person or $8/person (family 4+). Prepayment required with reservation by calling 757-566-3036.
  • Seine nets have been used for ages to catch fish and other creatures in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributary rivers. Experience River Seining on Sunday, May 27 from 1-3 p.m. Park rangers will lead you in discovering the variety of aquatic life in the York River with seine and dip nets.
  • Can you tell the difference between a venomous and non-venomous snake? Do you know what fish osprey feed on? Have you ever observed where great blue heron nest? The Roaming Ranger will be around to point out these and other points of interest in the park on Sunday, May 27 from 4-5 p.m.
  • As the colors of sunset fall on the marsh, a variety of sounds can be heard from birds and other creatures. Enjoy the beauty of this special time on the water with a guided paddling trip on Sunday, May 27 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Canoes are $9/person or $6/person (family of 4+), solo kayaks are $16/person, and tandem kayaks are $11/person.
